Baby Atlas is a roots-influenced power trio based in Austin, Texas. Each member hails from a different corner of Texas, and brings different influences to the band. David Jimenez (guitar/vox), has a distinctive sound in his playing, something difficult to do in the electric guitar Mecca that is Austin. He draws on many influences with his soulful voice in the style of Shuggie Otis and Donny Hathaway. The rhythm section of Wendy Simmons (bass/vox) and David Carroll (drums) has a unique chemistry. Simmons is influenced by her gospel upbringing. She is a multi talented singer/bassist/arranger and loves her some Ludwig Van. George Porter Jr. Carroll, aka Pow, lists his influences as Bernard Purdie and Levon Helm. He prefers grooves that are honest and heartfelt. Together, they deliver the goods as Baby Atlas, Austin’s premier roots-based power trio. Tickets available at the door or at outhousetickets.com. Music begins at 9:00 p.m.

Blacktop Gypsy

Blacktop Gypsy, Live Music, Tyler Texas, East Texas, Lago del Pino
June 28, 2013

Live Music

There’s a bit of sting in this harmonious combination of country, folk and bluegrass. One listen to Blacktop Gypsy’s second effort, Whirlwind, and you’ll hear some world-weariness in lead singer Andie Kay Joyner’s voice. Add harmony vocals, including from fiddle, mandolin and acoustic guitar player Heather Stalling, and you get a penetrating batch of songs that examine the emotional push and pull of daily life. Tracks such as “Please,” “Butterfly,” “There’s No Angel” and a cover of Stevie Nicks’ “Too Far From Texas” give you a sense of Blacktop Gypsy’s sonic breadth. Music begins at 8:00 p.m. Tickets available at the door or at outhousetickets.com.

Something Blue

Something Blue, Live Music, Tyler Texas, East Texas, Lago del Pino
June 29, 2013

Live Music

Born and raised in East Texas, the boys from Something Blue having been re-imagining the blues and gaining fans since 2004. That’s when Delano Guevara (guitar/lead vocals), Angelo Lopez (electric and upright bass) and Chris Oliver (drums/vocals) decided to reinvent what a blues-band could be: equal parts stripped-bare rock and juke-joint bounce, with the chops to cover anything lying in between. Something Blue knows the history of the blues, but they seek to put their flair and edge on it. And, they’ve got the talent to pull it off … with plenty to spare. Music starts at 9:00 p.m.
